Begin your day inside the Forbidden City, entering through its southern gate and following the central axis through a sequence of grand courtyards and halls. As you walk deeper, the atmosphere gradually shifts from formal ceremonial spaces to quieter residential quarters, revealing how the imperial court was structured and lived. Take time to observe the scale, symmetry, and details that define this former palace complex.

After exiting, continue to Jingshan Park, located just north of the palace. A short climb up the hill leads you to a viewpoint overlooking the rooftops of the Forbidden City, where the full layout of the central axis unfolds clearly from above.

From Jingshan Park, continue along the northern section of Beijing’s Central Axis, passing Wanning Bridge, an ancient link in the city’s historic water system. Shichahai follows, with lakeside scenery and traditional neighbourhoods bringing a more relaxed rhythm to the capital. The route ends near Guangfu Temple and the Drum Tower, once a focal point of timekeeping and daily life in old Beijing.

Leave the city behind and drive about 1.5 hours to the Jinshanling section of the Great Wall. Compared to touristy sections, this area feels more open and less crowded. You’ll walk along uneven stone paths, passing watchtowers at regular intervals, with views of the Wall stretching across mountain ridges. The hike can be adjusted to your pace, allowing time to stop and take in the surroundings.

Afterward, continue to Gubei Water Town at the foot of the mountains, where stone bridges, canals, and traditional-style buildings create a quiet and well-paced transition after time on the Wall. As evening falls, make your way to the Simatai section of the Great Wall for a night visit. You’ll then visit Changling, the largest and best-preserved tomb of the Ming Tombs complex, where imperial architecture unfolds through stone courtyards, ceremonial gateways, and a quiet forest setting. The layout reflects the scale and restraint of Ming dynasty burial design, with strong axial order and a calm, enduring atmosphere at the foot of Tianshou Mountain.

Head to Shougang Park, a former steel industrial site that has been transformed into a public space.
